Warts are caused by an infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus causes an excess amount of keratin, a hard protein, to develop in the top skin layer (epidermis).
Warts are contagious and they can spread by close skin-to-skin contact. The infection can also be transmitted indirectly from contaminated objects or surfaces, such as wet towels, napkins etc. Warts can spread to other parts of the body in same person.
What are the types of warts? Wart types vary depending on the affected body part.
